Why did Judas betray Jesus?

Jesus: “Judas’ betrayal is one of the most poignant events in the Scriptures, marking a critical moment in the path to the crucifixion. The reasons behind Judas Iscariot’s betrayal are complex and multifaceted. Scripture points to a combination of disillusionment, greed, and spiritual darkness. In John 12:6, Judas is noted for taking from the money bag, indicating greed. Additionally, Luke 22:3-4 describes how Satan entered into Judas, leading him to conspire with the chief priests. This suggests a spiritual dimension to his betrayal.”

Peter: “Lord, was Judas always going to betray you? Did he have a choice?”

Jesus: “Peter, while my foreknowledge of Judas’ betrayal was clear, it is important to understand that Judas had free will. The choices he made, influenced by his own desires and external forces, led him down the path of betrayal. It’s a sobering reminder of the dangers of letting greed, disillusionment, or spiritual darkness take root in one’s heart.”

John: “Master, how did you respond to Judas, knowing he would betray you?”

Jesus: “John, I responded with love and sorrow, offering Judas opportunities for repentance. At the Last Supper, I washed his feet along with the others, a gesture of love and servitude. My interactions with Judas were marked by a desire for his redemption, despite knowing the outcome.”

Andrew: “What can we learn from Judas’ betrayal?”

Jesus: “Andrew, Judas’ story is a cautionary tale about the peril of losing one’s way despite being close to the light. It teaches the importance of vigilance over one’s heart and motivations, the dangers of allowing sin to fester, and the need for continual reliance on God’s grace. Let it also remind you of the power of forgiveness and redemption that I offer to all, no matter their failings.”

Thomas: “But, Lord, how should we deal with betrayal in our own lives?”

Jesus: “Thomas, when faced with betrayal, look to my example. Offer forgiveness, seek healing, and entrust justice to God. While betrayal is painful, it can also be a catalyst for growth in faith and character, deepening your reliance on God’s strength and comfort.”

Matthew: “Master, does Judas’ betrayal diminish the hope of redemption for others?”

Jesus: “Matthew, on the contrary, it underscores the depth of God’s love and the breadth of redemption available. My sacrifice on the cross is sufficient for all sins, offering hope and forgiveness to anyone who comes to me in repentance. The tragedy of Judas lies not in the inevitability of his actions but in his failure to seek forgiveness and redemption.”
