What is Honesty?

Jesus: My dear friends, honesty is a virtue highly esteemed by our Father in Heaven. It involves being truthful in all our words and actions, living with integrity, and being sincere in our dealings with others.

Peter: Master, can you share some examples from the Scriptures that highlight the importance of honesty?

Jesus: Certainly, Peter. In Proverbs 12:22, it is written, “Lying lips are abomination to the Lord: but they that deal truly are his delight.” This shows how much God values truthfulness and how He delights in those who are honest.

Andrew: What about in our relationships with others, Lord? How does honesty play a role there?

Jesus: Andrew, honesty is fundamental to building trust and maintaining healthy relationships. Ephesians 4:25 instructs us, “Wherefore putting away lying, speak every man truth with his neighbour: for we are members one of another.” Being truthful with one another fosters unity and trust within the community.

John: Master, I remember you saying, “I am the way, the truth, and the life” (John 14:6). How does your example teach us about honesty?

Jesus: John, as you have said, I am the truth. My life and teachings reflect the perfect example of honesty and integrity. I have always spoken the truth, even when it was difficult or when it challenged the status quo. Following my example means embracing truth in all aspects of our lives, even when it requires courage and sacrifice.

James: What are the consequences of dishonesty, Lord?

Jesus: James, dishonesty can have severe consequences, both spiritually and relationally. It can lead to broken trust, damaged relationships, and a tarnished reputation. Proverbs 19:5 warns, “A false witness shall not be unpunished, and he that speaketh lies shall not escape.” Furthermore, dishonesty separates us from God’s will and grieves the Holy Spirit.

Thomas: How can we cultivate honesty in our lives, Master?

Jesus: Thomas, cultivating honesty requires a heart committed to truth and a desire to align with God’s will. Here are a few steps to guide you:

  1. Examine your heart: Reflect on your motives and intentions, ensuring they are pure and truthful.
  2. Confess and repent: If you have been dishonest, confess your sins and seek forgiveness from God and those you have wronged.
  3. Seek God’s guidance: Pray for strength and wisdom to speak and act truthfully in all circumstances.
  4. Be accountable: Surround yourself with fellow believers who can encourage and hold you accountable in your pursuit of honesty.

Peter: Thank you, Master. Your words always bring clarity and guidance.

Jesus: You are welcome, Peter. Remember, honesty is not just about avoiding lies but about embracing and living in the truth. By doing so, you honor God and reflect His character to the world.
