What does “An eye for an eye” mean?

Jesus: Friends, have you heard the saying, “An eye for an eye, and a tooth for a tooth”?

Peter: Yes, Master, it’s a common teaching. It means if someone harms you, you should harm them back in the same way, right?

Jesus: Peter, this phrase indeed comes from the ancient laws, meant to provide justice. But I say unto you, do not resist an evil person. If someone strikes you on the right cheek, turn to them the other also.

John: But Master, how can we seek justice if we do not respond in kind?

Jesus: John, true justice and peace are not found in retaliation. “An eye for an eye” can lead to endless cycles of vengeance. Instead, show love and forgiveness. This is the path to true healing and harmony.

Andrew: So, by turning the other cheek, we are not seeking revenge but promoting peace?

Jesus: Exactly, Andrew. It’s about breaking the cycle of retribution and showing a higher way of love and forgiveness, as our Heavenly Father does.

Thomas: It sounds challenging, Lord. How can we find the strength to live this way?

Jesus: Thomas, it is indeed challenging, but with faith and prayer, you’ll find the strength. Remember, the Kingdom of Heaven is not about earthly power but about love, mercy, and forgiveness.
