Teach us the meaning of Genesis 1:26

Jesus: “Genesis 1:26 is a pivotal verse in Scripture where God says, ‘Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth.’ This verse reveals the intentional creation of humanity with a unique identity and purpose.”

Peter: “Being made in God’s image, what does that mean for us?”

Jesus: “Peter, being made in the image of God means that humans reflect aspects of God’s character—His creativity, capacity for relationship, rationality, and moral awareness. It sets humanity apart as unique in creation, endowed with dignity and worth, and tasked with the stewardship of the earth.”

Andrew: “And the part about having dominion, how should we understand that?”

Jesus: “Andrew, dominion means stewardship, not exploitation. It’s about caring for creation responsibly and wisely, ensuring that it flourishes. It’s a call to partnership with God in tending to the world, reflecting His care and love for all He has made.”

John: “This partnership with creation, it’s a reflection of our relationship with God?”

Jesus: “Exactly, John. Your interaction with the world should mirror the love, respect, and care that God shows toward all of His creation. It’s about coexisting in harmony, recognizing the value of every creature and resource.”

James, son of Zebedee: “So, our role is to maintain balance and harmony within creation?”

Jesus: “Yes, James. It’s about maintaining the balance that God established at creation. This involves respecting the natural limits, protecting habitats, and ensuring that all of God’s creatures have what they need to live and thrive.”

Philip: “It seems like a big responsibility, caring for the earth in this way.”

Jesus: “It is, Philip, but it’s also a privilege. God trusts humanity with His creation, inviting you to participate in its care. It’s an opportunity to serve and honor God by how you treat the natural world and everything in it.”

Bartholomew: “How can we better fulfill this role in today’s world, with all its challenges?”

Jesus: “Bartholomew, start with small steps. Be mindful of how you use resources, support efforts to protect the environment, and educate others about the importance of stewardship. Live in a way that reflects gratitude for God’s creation, and seek His wisdom in how to care for it.”

Matthew: “It’s about living out our identity as image-bearers of God.”

Jesus: “Precisely, Matthew. As bearers of God’s image, your lives should exemplify the values and character of God—love, justice, mercy, and stewardship. By doing so, you not only honor God but also contribute to the well-being of the planet and all its inhabitants.”

Thomas: “It’s a reminder that our faith has practical implications for how we live and interact with the world around us.”

Jesus: “Thomas, faith that does not impact how you live is incomplete. True faith transforms your actions, guiding you to live in a way that reflects God’s love and stewardship of creation. It’s about bringing the kingdom of God to bear on every aspect of life, including how you care for the earth.”
