Matthew 21:9

Jesus: “Matthew 21:9 captures a moment of celebration and recognition as I entered Jerusalem. The verse reads, ‘And the multitudes that went before, and that followed, cried, saying, Hosanna to the Son of David: Blessed is he that cometh in the name of the Lord; Hosanna in the highest.’ This event, known as Palm Sunday, marks the beginning of Holy Week, leading up to the crucifixion and resurrection.”

Peter: “Lord, what does ‘Hosanna’ mean? Why were the people shouting it?”

Jesus: “Peter, ‘Hosanna’ is a cry for salvation; it means ‘save, please.’ The people were acknowledging their hope and belief that the Messiah had come to save them. They recognized me as the Son of David, a rightful king, coming in the name of the Lord. It was a declaration of faith in my mission and identity.”

John: “Why did they use palm branches, Master?”

Jesus: “John, the palm branches were a symbol of victory and triumph. In ancient times, they were used to celebrate conquering heroes. The people were declaring their expectation of victory over oppression, seeing in me a deliverer. However, my kingdom was not to be one of earthly power, but of spiritual salvation.”

Andrew: “What was the significance of your choice to ride on a donkey?”

Jesus: “Andrew, riding on a donkey, rather than a horse, was a fulfillment of prophecy, specifically from Zechariah 9:9, which speaks of a king who comes in peace, humble, and riding on a donkey. It symbolized the nature of my kingship and mission—not to conquer with force, but to bring peace and salvation through humility and sacrifice.”

Thomas: “Did everyone understand what was happening that day?”

Jesus: “Thomas, while many were caught up in the joy and hope of the moment, not all understood the full significance of what was to unfold. The same crowds that shouted ‘Hosanna’ would soon face the challenge of seeing their expectations of a political messiah unmet, leading to a turn in public sentiment. My path was one of suffering, leading to the cross, which was the true victory.”

Matthew: “How should we remember Palm Sunday today, Lord?”

Jesus: “Matthew, remember Palm Sunday as the day that marks the beginning of the journey toward the ultimate act of love—my crucifixion and resurrection. It is a time to reflect on the nature of true kingship and salvation, celebrating the peace and redemption I bring. Let it be a reminder of your call to follow in my footsteps, embracing humility and serving others in love.”
