If Humanity Shuns God, Would God Die?

Jesus: My dear friends, God does not depend on humanity for His existence. He is eternal and unchanging. As it is written, “I am the Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the ending, saith the Lord, which is, and which was, and which is to come, the Almighty” (Revelation 1:8). God existed before creation, and He will remain forever. Even if every soul were to turn away, His being and His power would not diminish, for He is the source of all life, not sustained by it.

Thomas: Master, it is hard for me to understand sometimes. If we, as His creation, choose to reject Him, does it not hurt Him? How can God be so powerful and yet not affected by our turning away?

Jesus: Thomas, it grieves the heart of God when His children turn from Him, but His nature remains the same. His love is steadfast, even when we stray. Think of the father in the parable of the prodigal son—his son left him, but the father did not cease to love him or to watch for his return. So it is with God. He longs for all to come back to Him, but His being does not depend on it. “The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance” (2 Peter 3:9).

Philip: But if all of humanity rejected Him, would that not mean the world would fall apart? If He holds all things together, would life even continue without God?

Jesus: You speak wisely, Philip. It is true that God upholds all things. “For in him we live, and move, and have our being” (Acts 17:28). Without His sustaining power, nothing would exist. But God does not die or cease to be if humanity rejects Him. Rather, it is humanity that suffers, for separation from God is separation from life, truth, and love itself. If the world turned entirely away from God, the darkness that would follow is not His death, but the loss of the life and light that He offers.

John: Master, your words remind me of what you have said before: “I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life” (John 8:12). So, without you, the world would be in darkness, not because God has died, but because we have chosen to shut out the light.

Jesus: Exactly, John. God does not perish because of humanity’s choices. But know this, my friends: even if the world turns away, God remains with arms open, ready to receive any who come back to Him. His love never fails. Even in the darkest moments, His light remains, waiting to be embraced. Remember always, “I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly” (John 10:10).
