Jesus: That’s a thoughtful question. Many times, people approach God as if He is distant, praying to Him, not realizing He is right here, ready to walk with you, speak with you. When you pray, think of it as a conversation, not a one-way plea. God is not a far-off being who only hears requests. He desires a relationship with you—a relationship where you speak, but also listen.
John: Master, you mean that we should seek to hear God’s voice, not just make our needs known?
Jesus: Exactly, John. When you talk with God, it means your heart is open to His response, His guidance. Think of how we speak together, how you come to Me not just with questions, but also to learn, to reflect. That’s how your relationship with the Father should be. Be still, and know that He is God. He speaks in many ways—through the quiet whisper of your spirit, through scripture, through the circumstances of life.
Andrew: Lord, I remember the prophet Elijah. He didn’t find God in the wind or the earthquake, but in the still small voice. Is that what you mean, that we should listen in quietness?
Jesus: Yes, Andrew, that’s it. Sometimes the noise of life can drown out the voice of God. To talk with Him, you must quiet your soul and seek His presence in the silence. Pray with your heart as much as your words, and in return, you will find Him guiding you, comforting you, correcting you.
Peter: But how do we know it’s God’s voice we hear? What if it’s just our own thoughts?
Jesus: You will know by the peace that comes with it, Peter. God’s voice never brings confusion or fear, but peace, even in the hardest of times. His voice aligns with His Word. That’s why I often say, “He that hath ears to hear, let him hear.” Not just the sounds of the world, but the voice of God within. If you remain close to Him, you’ll recognize His voice, just as a sheep knows the voice of its shepherd.
Thomas: Lord, it sounds difficult to hear this voice. What if doubt clouds our mind?
Jesus: It’s not uncommon to doubt, Thomas. But faith grows in practice. The more you engage with God’s Word and seek His presence, the clearer His voice becomes. Don’t rush. Like any relationship, it takes time.
