Jesus: “Acts 1:1 begins the account of the early church, written by Luke as a continuation of his Gospel. It says, ‘The former treatise have I made, O Theophilus, of all that Jesus began both to do and teach,’ referring to the Gospel of Luke as the ‘former treatise’ addressed to Theophilus. This introduction sets the stage for the narrative of how the disciples continued the work I began, empowered by the Holy Spirit.”
Peter: “Lord, what’s the significance of Luke mentioning ‘all that Jesus began both to do and teach’?”
Jesus: “Peter, by saying ‘began to do and teach,’ Luke implies that my work on earth was just the beginning. The Acts of the Apostles then recounts how that work continued through my disciples and the early church, guided by the Holy Spirit. It highlights the continuity of my mission in the world, carried on by those who follow me.”
Andrew: “Who was Theophilus, the person Luke wrote to?”
Jesus: “Andrew, Theophilus is believed to have been a Roman official or a person of high social standing, possibly a patron who supported Luke’s work. His name means ‘friend of God’ or ‘loved by God.’ While the exact identity of Theophilus remains a matter of speculation, his inclusion underscores that the message of the Gospel and the acts of the early church are intended for all who seek to know and follow God.”
John: “How should we view the Acts of the Apostles in light of your teachings, Lord?”
Jesus: “John, view the Acts of the Apostles as both a historical account and a blueprint for the church’s mission. It illustrates how the Holy Spirit empowers believers to witness and spread the Gospel, emphasizing the importance of community, prayer, and perseverance in the face of challenges. Acts invites you to participate in the ongoing story of my church, empowered by the same Spirit.”
Philip: “What role does the Holy Spirit play in continuing your work through us today?”
Jesus: “Philip, the Holy Spirit is central to continuing my work. As the Comforter and Guide I promised to send, the Spirit empowers, teaches, and reminds you of everything I have said. Through the Holy Spirit, you receive the strength to witness, the wisdom to navigate life’s challenges, and the gifts needed to serve the church and the world. The book of Acts demonstrates the transformative power of the Spirit in the lives of believers.”
Matthew: “It’s inspiring to think we’re part of the same mission that began with your disciples.”
Jesus: “Indeed, Matthew. You are part of this grand narrative, called to carry forward the mission with love, courage, and reliance on the Holy Spirit. Just as the early church grew and spread the Gospel, you are empowered to make disciples of all nations, living out the values of the Kingdom of God. Remember, ‘you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses’ (Acts 1:8).”
